How old are YOU?
*Age is defined by knowledge, not by the year you were born in.*
That is what I have come to conclude after thinking for 2 days.
Hmm... This sounds like crap. Should I stop?
...
Nah.
So anyway, back then when we had the PTS exam in standard 3, some kids got to skip one year of primary school and move to standard 5 with the students a year older than them. I'm sure you know at least one of them. I know a handful too.
Just that day, well, 2 days ago actually, I went out for lunch with a bunch of my classmates during lunch break. One of them was Soo Qi, a girl I quite liked immediately thanks to her great personality PLUS! We both enjoy further math2 more than 1. Haha... :) We also enjoy physics. (Which reminds me... Her birhtday's this Sunday. 12 of Feb.)
Anyway, I happen to call her "Soo Qi jie jie" at one point(as a joke...sorta) and she went
"I'm younger than you larrr..."
Obviously, she was one of those who had passed the PTS exam. I was SHOCKED! I didn't know! I seriously thought she was older since her birthday IS before mine. It just didn't click- she being younger than me. It really didn't feel like it at all!
I mean, you also have friends who passed the PTS exam. Do YOU treat them like they are any younger? Do you even realise or feel that they are any younger? No? Why not?
In MY opinion, I think it's because they ARE basically the same age. As I said, age is defined by knowledge and because they are learning the same things as we are, they are at no point inferior to us. They are in fact, of the same level! There you have it! A perfectly logical explanation as to why we don't feel like they're younger and why I didn't realise and couldn't imagine Soo Qi being younger than me.
Gosh, I still feel like she's older. Sssshh.. Don't tell her.
Well, some of you might argue that this might not be true. That we don't realise they are younger than us because it is merely a year. So I considered other situations and wondered if it was the same.
Let's see. If there was a little boy genius who knew everything you knew and talked just like any other friend of yours, would you still treat him like a little kid as his size indicates or would you talk to him and treat him as though he was your age? I think I'd treat him like he was 18. :p (Eighteen sounds pretty old! Am I supposed to be all matured now? Haha..)
Well, now what if there was a man who acted like he was 7? Would you still treat him like an adult? Possibly not.
Then again, if there was an adult who acted our age, I think we just might still see him/her as an adult...
Come to think of it, it IS rather difficult to treat someone without taking notice of the person's appearance. At this I mean, we still tend to treat kids like kids and adults like adults. I wonder if babies hate it when we start mumbling gibberish to them. After all, babies know the secret to life. (According to "Baby Geniuses" - Did you watch it? It's a good show.)
Hmm... which reminds me. Didn't the little girls in the movie "13 going on 30" treat Jenna like she was their age? Then again, it WAS a movie- fictional. Hehe...
So it all comes down to this, how much knowledge do you have?
How old are YOU?
I reckon I'm five. *grins*

yeah, u're right.. we know that they are younger/ older, but we still treat them the way we treat others our own age group, which they are!
there's a guy in my class who is 1 year older, and a few others 1 year younger. and you wouldn't know it unless u check their ic. we also got a girl who did O levels in Singapore, who is 1 year younger, but she's who everyone turns to when we have a problem.
